New Plastic Congkak

NO more heavy wooden board to lug around for a game of congkak. Inventor Ting Sie Bing, 59, has come up with a portable, light and easily assembled plastic version of the traditional game.

"One reason why the game has lost its popularity is that the wooden models are expensive and cumbersome to carry around. With this new model, we might even save a few precious trees from being felled," he said. Ting, who has several local and international awards under his belt, is known for devising the automatic brake activator that is undergoing feasibility studies by an automobile company in Germany.

Ting's congkak, launched last December, comes in six models, with prices ranging from RM20 to RM40. It entailed 18 months of research in which a Taiwanese firm was engaged to conduct computer simulation for the mould. Ting attributes his zeal and flair for innovations to a dogged pursuit in fulfilling his inspirations.

"It does not matter if you have not got a prestigious paper qualification. What matters is hard work," said the Sitiawan-born Ting, whose highest qualification is a certificate from a technical trade school. He said a game of congkok is ideal for relaxation and helps to improve concentration. "It also helps to preserve tradition and is an excellent alternative to video games with their adverse side-effects," he said.

The game is believed to have originated in Egypt 3,500 years ago and slowly found its way throughout the world in various forms. Ting's firm, Syarikat Pennainan Malaysia Sdn Bhd, plans to market the product overseas as it can be played according to regional variations of the game. The company is the biggest games manufacturer in the country which earlier introducedthe first Bahasa Malaysia crossword board game, Sahibba, in addition to the Malaysian version of Monopoly, Saidina.
